It is a phrase we’ve been hearing for a few years now, but when you get to a certain age or a stage in life, it begins to make more sense, and we are less dismissive of what we would previously deem a misguided lifestyle lecture. After all, when you are young, there isn’t much more exciting than going out. But in today’s society there are so many lifestyle extensions and home comforts we can take advantage of, that people of all ages are seeing the benefits to staying in.
Okay, so going out all the time can get expensive, and it can be quite tiring after a long week at work, furthermore, you don’t always need the hassle of busy bars or clubs or queuing for taxis, and sometimes you can’t even be bothered to make plans that please everyone. So you decide you would rather stay in, but what is it that makes staying in the new going out?
Control
A big factor that appeals when staying in is that you are in control. If you want to sit in your PJs all night bingeing on crisps then you can. You can also listen to whatever music you like, drink whatever you want or watch whatever you want on the TV. You don’t even need to have a plan. The beauty of staying in is the freedom you have to do what you want, with no door staff, overdraft limits or awkward friends dictating what you do.
Quiet time
Everyone deals with work stress in different ways, and going out is one way of doing it. But sometimes ‘quiet time’ is essential in sorting your head out, calming your nerves and re-setting yourself. A nice book or a box set on Netflix can be the remedy for a week from hell.
Keep in touch
If you want to stay in touch with your friends but can’t be bothered with the hassle of going out, then social media is your answer, with numerous ways you can chat, laugh and share things from the comfort of your sofa and without spending an hour getting ready, paying extortionate drinks prices and waking up the next morning feeling like death.
Dinner parties
A traditional way to add some glamour to your ‘staying in’ is to hold a dinner party, where you can have all the thrills of going out, but without the hassle. You can still eat, drink and listen to what you want to, but you can sit on your luxurious sofa all night, not stand in some crowded bar getting drink spilt on you and shouting yourself hoarse trying to have a conversation.
Fall in love with your sofa
Your sofa is your best friend; it is always there for you, to comfort you, to never answer back and to remain as a consistent thread in your life. So why not spend some quality time with your sofa? Instead of going out, you can stay up late and really indulge in the unique comfort you get from your own sofa. If you think about how much you spend on going out over a year, the cost of a sofa is probably only a fraction of that, but it is still the best investment you will ever make.
