Sofa Too Big For Your Door? Practical Ways To Get A Sofa Through Your Door

2018-11-14T17:30:21+00:00

There is no place like home, they say! We say there is no such thing as a “home” without a big, cosy sofa.

No doubt you are here because you are worried that you won’t get that new sofa that you’ve set your heart on through the door and into your home, or maybe it’s much worse than that and you’ve already spent a lot of time searching for your perfect new sofa only to have to send it back on delivery as you can’t get it through your door!

We’ve written this article to give you some helpful tips and hints on how to solve your problems and get that big comfy sofa of your dreams into your home – regardless of its size!

Five tricks on how to get a sofa through your door

The delivery company might have some aces up their sleeves, but just in case they’re not very helpful, here is a list of five things to try when your sofa is too big for the door:

1. Buy a smaller sofa

Sometimes you have to limit your sofa ambitions to the confines of your home, so If you have already purchased a sofa that is too big for your door, check out the purchase contract. You may have up to 14 days to send it back to the seller, when you’ve done that you can replace it with something suitable (and smaller) to your available space.

2. Take off the sofa legs

With a lot of sofas you will find that the legs have been screwed into the frame of the sofa and that these can relatively simply be removed with a screwdriver thereby gaining an extra few centimeters of space, maybe enough to get the sofa through your door.

3. Remove all the cushions and legs and turn through 45 degrees

Most often the back cushions on your sofa won’t be fixed in place; you can take these off the sofa and will usually save a few centimeters off of the height measurement of your sofa by combining this saving together with tilting the sofa through a 45 degree angle you might gain those few extra centimeters that you need to squeeze your new sofa through the narrow door of your home that is causing you all of the heartache.

4. Take the door off the hinges

If steps 1 and 2 above haven’t fixed your problems it’s time to take some more radical steps and step 3 is one of them, this idea isn’t as difficult as might think and you will definitely gain a few extra centimeters of space by taking the door off its hinges, all you need is a screwdriver and a bit of elbow grease.

5. Widen the doorway

Perhaps a radical step? But if there’s enough space perhaps it’s time to do away with thaty pesky narrow door and make it into a bigger one, time to get out the hammer and chisel or talk nicely to your friendly neighbourhood builder.

 6. Chop it in half

Perhaps this idea is a little extreme! But by chopping your sofa in half you are sure to be able to get it through that narrow door of your home, of course you need to be sure that you can put it back together again when you’ve finished chopping up your sofa or you may not be a very happy bunny!

Extra tip: Alternatively, you could try moving the sofa through the window if you have this possibility. It is particularly practical especially if your window has two openings (also known as two panel casement window), like in the image below. The opening is thus wider than a door’s. Of course you might need a crane to help move the sofa through the window, especially if you live on an upper floor.
